Hill Top Bakery, Dovercourt High Street

An interesting view looking East along the High Street, Dovercourt taken in 1907.
The original photograph was taken near the junction of Hill Road and Mill Lane, looking East down the High Street. Many of the houses further down the road, have since been demolished around 1933 (when Woolworth's opened in 1934, later Iceland foods).
This early card was one of the famous "Bill Hopkins collection" and produced by Bells Photo Company from Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

The Excel Series consisted of 50 high quality real photographs of the Harwich and Dovercourt area and were produced between 1934 and 1939 (just prior to World War Two).
In this view taken looking North East towards Harwich, we have a thriving town centre, with Holly Close to our left and J.A Saunders to our right. A later card (number 17 from the same series) shows the same Woolworth's store.

The High Street, Dovercourt (1906) by F.Newell of Manningtree

This photograph taken around 1906 shows “The Capital and Counties Bank Limited”, built in 1902 which preceded the commercial developments on that side of the road.
The Capital and Counties Bank Limited was a London clearing bank, which operated 473 branches throughout the United Kingdom from 1877 until its acquisition by Lloyds Bank in 1918.
Next door to the bank was the “The Eastern Drug Company” selling perfumes, tonics, medicines, wines, and liquor, beyond that the retail outlet was the “International Stores” selling a wide range of Groceries. The final two shops were “John Self's Store” Plumber, Gas Fitter. hardware and sporting goods, alongside is “T.J. Denney's fish shop” in the distance.

No.19. Dovercourt. High Street (1913)

This classic scene is dominated by the Capital and Counties Bank, built in 1902 by Messrs Bacon, Cobbold & Co, beyond that lies the "Eastern Drug Company" cash chemists and "International Tea Stores". Transport is still dominated by the "horse and cart" as the standard mode of transport,  while people nonchalantly cross the road, care-free of the absent passing motorist.
The original photograph was taken at the junction of Kingsway & the High St looking East towards Harwich.

Thompson Model Grocery Store, Dovercourt High Street, Essex in 1907

An interesting view looking east of the High Street, Dovercourt taken around 1907. The main view is of Thomson's (Grocer and provisions merchant) at 84-86 the High St. This building is now occupied by Joseph Lord the Opticians (now 145 the High Street), The postcard was posted on the 22nd December 1907 at 2:45 in the afternoon. The original photograph was taken near the junction of Kingsway & High St looking east.

This very early view of the town, shows almost no retail development at the Western end of the High Street.

Picture
The "High Street from West, Dovercourt" (1899) Valentines

One of the earliest postcards from the late Victorian period, illustrating well the undeveloped town centre at the turn of the century. No shops are present where later stood "Thompson's", "The Co-op", "Capital & Counties Bank" and "Pattinson's". At this time the main shopping area was still centred around "The Kings Arms" at the bottom of Orwell Terrace  as can be seen in the distance.
Within a decade linear development had led to the buildings, we still recognise today.
The postcode here is CO12 3AX

#31386 J.V. ~ An early albumen print of the "High Street, Dovercourt" (1899) by Valentines.

Albumen prints were made using albumen paper, popular for photographic printing between 1850 - 1900. Thin paper was coated with a layer of egg-white (albumen) containing salt & sensitized with a silver nitrate solution, then printed using daylight under a negative. The resulting paper had a smooth surface with a fine sheen. Albumen prints could be toned with a gold solution which gave a rich purplish-brown colour to the image & reduced fading.

These prints were eventually used on the earliest Dovercourt postcards from the late Victorian period, illustrating well the undeveloped town centre at the turn of the century. No shops are present where later stood "Thompson's", "The Co-op", "Capital & Counties Bank" and "Pattinson's". At this time the main shopping area was still centred around "The Kings Arms" at the bottom of Orwell Terrace  as can be seen in the distance.

Valentines photography business was founded in 1851 by James Valentine in his home town of Dundee. This was a move from printing business stationary into portrait photographs and then topographical photographs, building up his best-selling postcard business. After many years of success and expansion, the market for postcards and their other photographic products faded and they finally closed in 1994.

The High Street, Dovercourt, Essex (1907) by F. Newell of Manningtree

This early view of Dovercourt High Street, looking East towards Harwich in 1907, captures the fact that this was the more developed end of the commercial area, with the Post Office located within Willson's store (a library and bazaar) on the left at 67/69 the High Street.
The shop sold a great range of goods from postcards through to buckets and spades, as well as the normal stationery and newspapers.

Next door we can see a restaurant "H.Hawkes" specialist in "chops and steaks" as well offering rooms above (Harryotts Hotel) for visitors to the town, beyond this is "Raglan" cycle store, along with the Kings Arms Hotel in the distance.
