The Salvation Army, Naval & Military Home

27 Church Street, Harwich between Currents Lane and the Quayside.
Built before 1917, possibly opened for business on Friday May 15th 1914
It was closed in the late 1950's and later demolished and replaced by Mayflower House.
Its purpose was to serve the many soldiers and sailors who passed through Harwich via the Transit Camp in Dovercourt.
When the transit camp closed, it was converted into flats.

Special thanks to Keith Rowland and family for the additional information.

~ 1899 ~ The Harwich Salvation Army Band H&D ~ KRP ~

Picture
The Harwich Salvation Army Band dated 1899, the earliest known photo of the band.

The photo was taken outside the front door of the  Citadel  in George Street.
You can see the foundation stone that was put in place when the citadel was built in 1890 , that stone is still there some 130 years later.
The young lad holding the triangle is John Rowland, while the man behind young John is William Rowland.

The practice of putting stones into foundation stones comes from "Builders rites" which are ceremonies attendant on the laying of foundation stones, including ecclesiastical, masonic or other traditions connected with foundations or other aspects of construction.

One such custom is that of placing a few coins, newspapers, etc. within a cavity beneath the stone. Should the stone later be removed, the relics may be found. Though this tradition is still practiced, such memorials are likely deposited in the hope that they will never be disturbed. Another such rite is topping out, when the last beam (or its equivalent) is placed atop a structure during its construction.

The photo was possibly taken outside Harwich Town railway station.

Photo taken on the platform in the citadel
.

This platform was levelled in the mid 1950's as it used to be in staged tiers up to the side balconies, as shown in some of the other images above.
Some familiar faces here including Mr Rowland.

Picture
Harwich Citadel Songsters (choir) dated 1963

Another slightly later photo taken again on the platform inside the Harwich citadel.
Both Mr & Mrs Rowland are seen in this photo.
