“"We don’t remember days, we remember moments."

Moving west from Harwich we move inland to Little Oakley, Essex in the early 20th Century, to expand the neighbourhoods of North East Essex.

Little Oakley, Essex

Little Oakley is a village in Essex, England, on the western outskirts of Harwich. The parish population at the 2011 census was 1,171
It is the site of a fourth-century Roman villa, excavated between 1951 and 1975.

Just north-east of the village is Little Oakley Channel Deposit, a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is the site of former channel of the River Thames during an inter-glacial period about 575,000 years ago.

Foulton Hall Farmhouse, is a Grade II Listed Building, built in the 16th Century of Timber constriction

The Domesday Book records two parcels of land in the area, "Michaelstou" and "Ramefeia".
These were later divided into seven manors: those of Roydon Hall, Ramsey Hall, Michaelstowe, East New Hall, Strondland, Le Rey (Ray Island), and Foulton.

Margaret Thatcher has spent time at the Farm House in the 1950's and 1970's.

Now part of the William Cullen Farms Limited.

"Regulars" from the Cherry Tree pub, at Little Oakley in a Charabanc for the annual outing to Clacton in July 1924) H&F FC

Picture
The "Cherry Tree Mob" Little Oakley, on a Charabanc day trip to Clacton in July 1924

A shiny charabanc, with a gleaming bell ready for the off to Clacton in July 1924, with regulars from Ye Olde Cherry Tree, Little Oakley.
A Charabanc is a large bus, used on sightseeing tours, especially one with open sides and no centre aisle. Day trips were very popular in the 1920's with the arrival or relatively cheap motorised vehicles. It's clearly a "man's world" from this postcard !!

Postcode for the nearest location at Parkeston Road end is CO12  5JH
