~ A Little History ~
The original pool was built in 1924 and opened on Saturday July 5th by Councillor Mrs Lucy Hill. Originally it was 75 yards long by 25 yards wide. This was later divided into a main pool of 55 yards and a learner’s pool of 35 yards. It was filled directly from the sea at high tide once every fortnight. The water was unfiltered so anything could come in!
In 1963 the pool was closed at the end of the season for major refurbishment costing £60,000. The revamped main pool had the diving boards removed, but a new round diving pool was constructed with three boards. Changing rooms were concrete and still outdoors, along with the tuck shop. This pool was finally demolished around 1983 at the end of the season.
In 1984 Dovercourt's first indoor swimming pool was built by the local council. It is adjacent to the sea and cost £300,000 to build. It is constructed on a raised platform to give easy access for repairs and maintenance. It opened in Nov 1984.
