This lovely view looking east towards Harwich, captures a familiar scene in the inter-war period, with children playing safely on the "Green", away from the main road.
Long ago this was childhood, before the digital age took hold and no one ventured outside.

The Main Road, Upper Dovercourt, Essex (1920) By Wallis of Oakley

Another Wallis classic, looking North towards Clarkes Road, at Upper Dovercourt. This photograph taken shortly after the end of World War One, was taken just outside the current entrance to All Saints Church.
The original plans for the development of the area, contained many residential buildings, retail outlets and even room for a cinema, around the location of the junction of Fronks Road with the Main Road. In the end the four major developments were completed, including the Council housing built in 1920 on the Upper Dovercourt Green, followed by Main Road development, Parkeston Road and finally Rosebank in the early 1920’s.

Another Wallis classic, looking East towards Harwich, at Upper Dovercourt. This unusual photograph taken shortly before the start of World War One, shows the site of the War Memorial, marked by a lamppost and what looks like sewage pipes just in front of the adverting sign promoting the "Alexander Hotel".
